Collection: John Ruth

John Ruth is primarily a landscape painter, self taught, who paints in acrylic. He enjoys the versatility of the medium. It offers delicate water colour washes to overlays of stronger pigments. His subject matter includes landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, domestic interiors and figure studies. Although he generally paints in a realistic style, his paintings often imbue a sense of intensity and magic into an everyday experience.

“I have drawn and painted all my life. Most of my paintings are landscapes, but other themes have been family, figure studies, portraits, domestic interiors and fantasy. I strive to convey my sense of  wonder at the world around me through my art and to bring out the magic of commonplace things and ‘the everyday’. I paint mainly in acrylic on board, using the versatility of the paint to create delicate watercolour effects and overlay with stronger pigments. I like to use repetition and rhythm of line to suggest the rhythms and oneness of life.”

John works from his home studio in Hawkes Bay. His work is represented in many private collections in New Zealand and internationally.
